Pick-Up or a NCIC (1 of 2) • This form is used when a law enforcement professional investigates a crime when there is a probable cause to make an arrest, but the officer cannot locate the offender. • The pick-up form that has all the case information regarding the wanted person, the crime severity, and any other information that could be used to locate the suspect. Pick-Up or a NCIC (2 of 2) • The information from the pick-up is typically entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). • Every law enforcement agency in the nation has access to this vital information. • Note: a pick-up in any format is not a universal form, and it should not be confused with an arrest warrant, probable cause affidavit, or writ of commitment. Pick-Up or Want for a Vehicle • The information on the vehicle pick-up form for a vehicle is similar to a pick-up form for an individual. • This form is used to locate a vehicle that is stolen, used in the commission of a crime, or simply might belong to a missing person. Evidence Chain of Custody Sheet and Evidence Tags • Collection and documentation of evidence that is used in the commission of a crime • The law enforcement professional must maintain the chain of custody of an item that he or she has collected from a crime scene. • Make sure all firearms are unloaded and safe when placed into evidence. • This is to ensure that the weapon will not discharge accidentally when it is moved or handled by others.
