Repetition & Replication Repetition is the "repeating“ (multiple trials) of your own investigation for accuracy. Replication occurs when the investigation is "replicated" or copied by a different investigator.

How Scientists Work q How do we make sure we are looking at the right things? Answer: By double checking our work. q How do you think scientists are sure about their findings? Answer: Scientists make sure about their findings by two ways: 1. - Repeating (Doing multiple trials) of their experiment. 2. Replication (By others)

How Scientists Work q Before a hypothesis can be accepted as true, the experiment must be repeated many times with repeated trials. This is called Repetition. q Finally, scientists communicate their results. When communicating results, scientists include a description of the procedure so that other scientists can replicate it. This is called Replication. q Repetition and Replication ensure accuracy when performing scientific investigations. q Repetition and replication ensures that experiments and experimental data are accurate.

Notes: Repetition vs Replication • What is the difference Between repetition and Replication? Repetition: Making multiple sets (or trials) of measurements or observations in a scientific investigation. Replication The reproduction of a scientific investigation by another person to ensure accuracy

Example of Repetition: Mike has taught his pet rat to run a maze. He

Example of Repetition: Mike has taught his pet rat to run a maze. He thinks that the rat will go faster if he puts its favorite treat at the end. He has the rat run the maze ten times with the favorite treat and ten times with a regular food pellet. He uses a stopwatch to measure how ling it takes for the rat to get to the reward. Evidence that shows it is repetition: Experiment done by Mike, the same person. He made multiple trials.

Example of Replication: Dr. Smith has been reading about another scientist’s research in a

Example of Replication: Dr. Smith has been reading about another scientist’s research in a physics journal. He plans to do these experiments himself and see if he gets the same result. Evidence that shows it is replication: Dr. Smith is replicating another scientist experiment. (Done by other)

Stop and Think Question # 1: Why should experiments be replicable? Question # 2: Read the following scenario. What is this, repetition or replication? John was mixing a batch of glue and borax solution to make silly putty and discovered a new substance that glows in the dark. He gave Ryan his specific amounts of ingredients and the steps of his procedure. He asked Ryan to try the experiment to see if he gets the same results. Question # 3: What evidence support your answer?
