El Preterito Talking about the past

El Pretérito • The preterite is used for a past action that is completed. – Ex. “I saw a movie. ” “I went to the store. ” “I tried on some jeans. ” • How to form regular verbs: 1: drop the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) 2: add the appropriate preterite tense endings to match the subject. -ar verb endings é aste ó amos asteis aron -er /-ir endings í iste ió imos isteis ieron Note: the nosotros forms for -ar and -ir verbs are the same in both preterite and present tenses: hablamos, vivimos. Use context clues to help you know which tense is being used.

When do I use the preterite? • Generally speaking, the preterite is used for actions in the past that are seen as completed. (i. e. , the action had a definite beginning and ending, and isn’t still going on) • Juan comió el almuerzo a la una y media. Juan ate lunch at 1: 30. • Me probé seis vestidos en la tienda ayer. I tried on six dresses at the store yesterday. • La semana pasada mi amiga y yo compramos unos zapatos nuevos. Last week my friend and I bought new shoes.

They are conjugated just like other regular preterite verbs. • -IR verbs that change their stem in the present tense do change in the preterite, but in a different way. Irregular Verbs in the Preterite What makes a verb irregular? Its endings don’t follow the same pattern as other verbs of the same type! There are several irregular verbs in the preterite that will need to be MEMORIZED. Let’s get started!

voy ir vamos va vais van fuiste fuimos fuisteis To go Presente Pretérito fueron **Note that the conjugations of ir in the preterite are the same as the conjugations of ser… you’ll have to rely on context to know which verb is being used in a sentence!

veo ves ve vi viste vio ver vemos véis ven vimos visteis vieron To see Presente Pretérito **Ver is only irregular in that its forms have no accents. It uses the same verb endings as other ER/IR verbs in the preterite.

dar To give, to throw(a party) doy das da damos dais dan Presente di diste dio dimos disteis dieron Pretérito *Dar is a “confused” verb—it uses the endings for ER/IR verbs in the preterite tense even though it is an AR verb. **Also, just like ver, ser, and ir, its forms have no accents.

“Y” Verbs For verbs that end in -aer, -eer, -oír, and – oer… 1. the él/ella/usted forms use the ending "yó" (rather than ió), and 2. the third person plural uses the ending "yeron" (rather than ieron). 3.
