Reports to OLAW Protocol suspensions. Any protocol or animal activity suspension is an automatic report to OLAW and USDA (if the species used is a USDA regulated species). We had no suspensions of protocols for the 2019 year. Most times, the non-compliance which resulted in a report to OLAW can be traced back to an individual not reading the protocol. If, after reading the protocol, you are ever in doubt as to whether or not you can (or cannot) do an activity in a laboratory animal, contact the IACUC office.

Protocol Withdrawals The IACUC will withdraw protocols that do not have an annual review

Protocol Withdrawals The IACUC will withdraw protocols that do not have an annual review submitted by the deadline This means that all work on the protocol must cease This means that no breeding can be done on an withdrawn protocol – breeders must be separated Protocols will not be re-instated until an annual review has been submitted and approved by the IACUC

Personnel Withdrawals Individuals will be removed from protocols: If they fail to complete renewal

Personnel Withdrawals Individuals will be removed from protocols: If they fail to complete renewal training by the due date given to them by the IACUC office; If they fail to re-enroll in the OHS program by the due date given to them by the IACUC office Individuals removed from protocols will also have their access to the vivarium removed PIs will need to modify all protocols to re-add individuals if they have been removed Individuals will need to re-request facility access from CCM if their facility access has been removed

Protocol Approvals The IACUC is requiring that all protocols – both animal care and

Protocol Approvals The IACUC is requiring that all protocols – both animal care and use protocols and animal safety protocols – be signed by all individuals listed on the protocols. This signature is to assure that each individual: Has read the protocol; Understands the protocol; and Will follow the protocol

Important Reminders The next few slides are going to inform you of important items

Important Reminders The next few slides are going to inform you of important items of which you need to be aware when you are using laboratory animals at UCH.

Humane Endpoints All animal care and use protocols require the listing of humane endpoints.

Humane Endpoints All animal care and use protocols require the listing of humane endpoints. CCM SOPs that cover humane endpoints can be found at https: //ovpr. uchc. edu/services/rics/animal/ccm/. IACUC policies that discuss humane endpoints and other appropriate guidelines can be found at https: //ovpr. uchc. edu/services/rics/animal/iacuc/policies/. Not knowing about any policy or guideline is not an excuse for not following them. It is YOUR responsibility to be familiar with all policies and guidelines at UConn Health.

Body Condition Scoring The IACUC is encouraging the use of Body Condition Scoring as

Body Condition Scoring The IACUC is encouraging the use of Body Condition Scoring as a way to evaluate rodents to ensure humane endpoints. Please arrange training from Veterinary Services if this is new for you. We will now include this in animal care and use protocols in the near future.

Transgenic/Gene Targeted Rodents It is a requirement at UCH to have Genetically Modified Organism

Transgenic/Gene Targeted Rodents It is a requirement at UCH to have Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) numbers for all transgenic / gene targeted rodents regardless of their source of origin. This includes rodents made via CRISPR/Cas 9. These numbers are generated to ensure compliance with both animal welfare regulations and recombinant DNA regulations. These numbers can only be generated by the IBC coordinator and the IACUC coordinator. Do not make up your own GMO numbers. The full name of the transgenic animal, a nickname identified in the protocol, or the GMO number must be on all cages that contain genetically modified rodents.

Protocol Research Staff Everyone who uses animals must be listed on the approved protocol

Protocol Research Staff Everyone who uses animals must be listed on the approved protocol When people leave your laboratory and/or are no longer working on your protocol, you need to modify your protocol to delete personnel In order to use animals, everyone must: Have completed initial or renewal training Be current in OHS enrollment Be listed on an approved protocol Have clearance from Employee Health Service (x 2893)

Procedure Training Everyone that works on an animal protocol must document all animal procedural

Procedure Training Everyone that works on an animal protocol must document all animal procedural training received It is the PI’s responsibility to ensure procedure training; it is the staff member’s responsibility to document this training The training document is on the IACUC website at https: //ovpr. uchc. edu/wpcontent/uploads/sites/2568/2015/08/IACUCtrainingrecordsf orm 1. docx These documents may be obtained during semi-annual lab inspections, asked for during an annual review, or whenever the IACUC requests such documentation

Procedure Training Consider training from Veterinary Services They can train you on most procedures

Procedure Training Consider training from Veterinary Services They can train you on most procedures performed at UConn Health You may be required by the IACUC to have training from Veterinary Services You still need to document your training received from Veterinary Services (see previous slide) If you need refresher training on how to do something, please call them. They will help you.

Procedure Training How do I know if I have a safety protocol associated with

Procedure Training How do I know if I have a safety protocol associated with my animal protocol? The animal protocol will state it in the hazards section of the protocol. As everyone is required to read the animal protocol, there should be no questions as to whether or not you are working with a chemical or biological hazard that requires appropriate containment. Animals will be housed in the appropriate hazard facility as specified in your safety protocol(s) You must give CCM 3 days notice before starting any work with hazards that require containment in the chemical isolation room, the chemical isolation/ABSL-2 room, or the ABSL-2 suite. Training for the use of hazard rooms requires documentation. This documentation of training MUST be forwarded to the IACUC office.
