Notes for Teachers This resource draws upon a section of the book Skin Again by bell hooks, which helps move conversation about skin colour forward for children to develop dialogue around identity, diversity, uniqueness, community, sense of belonging and equality. Sensitivity, awareness and understanding of your class and community is always essential before exploring any activities relating to identity, for example for Looked After Children. This is even more important currently when children are learning at home so this lesson is fully adaptable so that you can change it to suit the needs of your class and the way you are delivering the lesson. This resource is fully adaptable and can be changed to suit the needs of your class. L. O To think about factors that contribute to my identity and the identity of others
Who in our class has green eyes? Who in our class can speak more than one language? Who in our class has no brothers or sisters? Who in our class can tie their own laces? Who in our class……. What questions would you ask? Who in our class is amazing at art? Who in our class has long hair? Who in our class is a fast runner? Who in our class plays cricket?
In these questions we have started thinking about what we call our identity. Did you notice anything you have in common with someone else in our class? Did anyone notice anything different between you and someone else?
We could use the word unique to describe every single person in our class (adults and children!). What do you think this word means? I know I’m unique, but what does this actually mean?
- Something that is unique is the only one of its kind. - You can use unique to describe things that you admire because they are very unusual or special.
Identity Your identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself, your characteristics, likes, skills, interests It is what makes you unique and special.
Look carefully at this front cover of a book called Skin Again. What do you think this book is about? Can you spot any clues that might help you work this out? Do you spot anything unusual ?
I wonder if you spotted the author’s name doesn’t use capital letters? It is not a mistake…it is meant to be like that. Author and teacher Gloria Watkins publishes her books under her pen name, bell hooks, in honour of her maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks. But she wants her pen name to be written in all lowercase letters to shift the attention from her identity to her ideas.
The front cover shows two hands with different colour skin. This book considers that although skin colour is one part of a person’s identity, each of us is so much more than that.
‘The skin I’m in is just a covering. It cannot tell my story… For we are all inside made up of real history, real dreams and the stuff we all hope for. ’ bell hooks
Spend a few minutes reflecting on the quote. You can write or draw anything you think of in this time, this can include any questions you might want to ask.
SKIN AGAIN by bell hooks The skin I’m in is just a covering. It cannot tell my story. If you want to know who I am you have got to open your heart way wide. The skin I’m in looks good to me. It will let you know one way to trace my identity.
What do you think the phrase below means? “Skin is just a covering” How would you describe your skin? Does your skin colour tell other people anything about you? What is really important about you?
Do you think you can know and understand someone just from looking at their appearance?
How do we let others know who we really are? Is it by the colour of our skin or the things we do?
What else is important about us? hope and dreams place of birth Family/ friends Can you think of all the things that make up your identity? What makes you special and unique? Religion/none Draw a picture of yourself. Write or draw all these things around you to show who you are. Likes and dislikes Skin, hair, eyes Hobbies/ interests
Now we are going to write our own identity poem, using the ideas from our picture and this sentence starter The skin I’m in is……. . Let’s first look at a few examples…
The Skin I’m In The skin I’m in Does not tell my story But it only tells you One thing which is You can guess my religion But you might be wrong The skin I’m in On the outside You will see light brown skin Brown eyes Black short hair Wearing clothes And black eyebrows I am a good person If you want to know My true story You have to come inside And open your heart way wide I love my skin colour And people can not Judge me by my colour But they can judge By my actions By Bilal
The Skin I’m In The skin I’m in Is just a covering I’m not a Muslim nor Christian I like Guns and Roses And also AC DC There are people I like And some people I don’t like The skin I’m in Is just a covering The skin I’m in Is not what I am I’m sometimes cheeky I am sometimes kind But you never know what I The skin I’m in am Is just a covering I am short and fast I like holidays and cricket I like Billie-Jo and being with friends By Noah
Now it is your turn…. . The Skin I’m in. The skin I’m in….
