ALMASA'S STORY 11 DURING MY FIRST YEAR OF SCHOOL, WAR BROKE OUT IN BOSNIA. I WAS SEVEN YEARS OLD. I WAS UNABLE TO FINISH THAT YEAR. MY SCHOOL WAS BOMBED, KILLING EIGHTEEN OF MY TEACHERS AND CLASSMATES. THANKFULLY, I WASN'T IN SCHOOL THAT DAY. THE ADULTS DIDN'T TELL ME DIRECTLY WHAT HAD HAPPENED, THEY SAID THE SCHOOL WAS CLOSED THAT DAY AND THE SCHOOL WAS MOVING CLOSER TO SREBRENICA. NOW THAT I'M OLDER, I KNOW THE TRUTH OF WHY MY SCHOOL WAS CLOSED AND THE TRAGEDY THAT STRUCK MY VILLAGE. WHEN WAR CAME TO MY VILLAGE, THE BOSNIAN SERB FORCES BURNED THE BUILDINGS TO THE GROUND. ME AND MY FAMILY FLED TO SREBRENICA, A UN SAFE-ZONE, WHERE I HAD TO REPEAT MY FIRST YEAR OF SCHOOL AGAIN. I CONTINUED MY EDUCATION IN A REFUGEE CAMP FOR INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE THAT WERE FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES. THE CLASSROOMS WERE LIKE SHEDS, TWO-BY-TWO, AND WE HAD TO GO TO SCHOOL IN SHIFTS BECAUSE THERE WASN'T ENOUGH SPACE FOR EVERYONE. SOMETIMES, IF THERE WAS FLOODING FROM THE NEARBY RIVER, LANDMINES FROM FURTHER UPSTREAM WOULD WASH DOWN AND INTO OUR MAKESHIFT CLASSROOMS MAKING THEM DANGEROUS TO STUDY IN. ON THE 11 TH JULY, THE BOSNIAN SERB FORCES ENTERED SREBRENICA. MY FAMILY WENT TO THE UN BASE AT POTOCARI TO TRY TO GET TO SAFETY. MY ELDEST BROTHER AND SISTER WERE SEPARATED FROM ME, MY YOUNGER BROTHER AND MY MOTHER. WE FOUND OUT LATER THAT THEY WERE INSIDE THE BASE, WHILE MY MOTHER AND I ARRIVED LATER AND WERE FORCED TO WAIT OUTSIDE. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND EACH OTHER WITH THE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAD GONE TO THE BASE FOR HELP. WHEN THE BUSES CAME TO TAKE US OUT OF SREBRENICA, ME, MY SISTER, MY YOUNGER BROTHER AND MY MOTHER GOT ON THEM. WE DID NOT KNOW AT THE TIME, BUT WE WOULD NOT SEE MY OLDER BROTHER AGAIN. HE HAD BEEN SEPARATED FROM MY SISTER WHEN LEAVING POTOCARI BASE BY THE BOSNIAN SERB SOLDIERS. HE WAS TAKEN AWAY AND MURDERED AS ONE OF 8, 372 BOSNIAN MUSLIM MEN AND BOYS WERE FROM SREBRENICA. MY BROTHER'S REMAINS WERE BURIED IN A MASS GRAVE, AND MOVED AFTER A FEW MONTHS. WE WERE NOT ABLE TO FIND ALL HIS REMAINS, BUT WE BURIED WHAT WE HAVE AT POTOCARI MEMORIAL CENTRE. BUT WE DIDN'T KNOW THIS WAS HAPPENING. I WAS A CHILD AND I WAS SCARED. I REMEMBER BEING ON THE BUSES AND THE BOSNIAN SERB SOLDIERS GETTING ON THE BUS AND ASKING FOR JEWELLERY OR MONEY - VALUABLES. THEY WANTED TO ROB US AS WE LEFT. I WAS SCARED, AND THE ONLY THING OF VALUE I HAD WAS A DOLL. I STOOD UP, SCREAMING AT THE SOLDIER TO TAKE IT FROM ME AS IT WAS ALL I HAD. THE BUS DRIVER TOLD SOLDIER TO GET OFF THE BUS, AS HE WAS SCARING US, AND WE ARRIVED AT THE NEXT SAFE AREA. NOW, I TEACH CHILDREN IN THE TOWN OF SREBRENIK, TO MAKE SURE THAT CHILDREN HAVE A RIGHT TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR OWN LANGUAGE, CULTURE, AND HISTORY INCLUDING WHAT HAPPENED TO US ALL AT SREBRENICA.
