What is the Sabbath? Recalls the 7 th day of creation. Gives humanity permission to interrupt their work and replenish their energies. A feast of human freedom A foretaste of the world to come.

Jesus and the Sabbath He observes the Sabbath, but at the same time he deals with it very liberally, as one who has complete command over it. Because he claims the right to heal on the Sabbath and interpret Sabbath laws poses a problem for Jewish contemporaries: 1. Either Jesus is the Messiah sent by God, which makes him “Lord even of the Sabbath” 2. Or he is merely a man, in which case his actions on the Sabbath are against the Law.

The Christian Sabbath is known as “The Lord’s Day” Three essential elements: ① Recalls creation of the world and communicates the festive splendor of God’s goodness to the passage of time. ② Recalls the “eighth day of creation” when the world was made new in Christ. ③ Includes theme of rest, not just to sanctify the interruption of work, but to point even now towards humanity’s eternal rest in God.

The Eighth Day There is creation and then there is, a “New Creation” Christ’s resurrection took place on the day after the Sabbath – which is considered the “Eighth Day” Now that Christ has risen, we live in the age of New Creation, the 8 th Day

Fulfilling the Sabbath Rest Abstain from labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God. Christians should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord’s Day. Some people are required to work on Sundays, but everyone should still set aside time for leisure. Sunday should be a time of prayer and activities to unify the family
