Remediated Rhetoric Activity Presented by Lacey Rowland New GTA Orientation Fall 2020
Goals for this activity 1. Students will be able to identify and analyze audience for their RR project. 2. Students will reflect on previous assignments and apply the concept of rhetorical appeals to their RR project. 3. Student will be able to brainstorm ideas to build on their reflection for the RR project.
Overview of Activity (More details in Lesson Plan) ● Mini-Lecture - Present student examples and use the discussion questions to prompt students to reflect on previous projects. ● Activity - Students create 2 -column chart to brainstorm about their audience and purpose and how those things change (or stay the same) between the original essay and their remix. ● Reflection/Drafting - Activity opens opportunity for further reflection and drafting.
Example of the chart Original Project (Literacy Narrative, Problem-Solving Essay, or Rhetorical Analysis) Audience: Peers, instructor Purpose: Inform about experience, reflect on literacy Remix Audience: Kids who don’t like to read or who struggle in school Purpose: Get kids excited about reading, show them that they’re not alone in the struggle
Adaptations for Online Learning Environment Asynchronous ● Pre-record lecture with tips on successful projects, show student examples and explain the “remix. ” ● Use discussion board for students to form groups to talk out their ideas. ● Have them find their own example of a remix to share with the class. Synchronous ● Breakout rooms for students to discuss their charts. ● Have students analyze the examples in small groups and report their findings to the main meeting. ● Use a shared document for them to brainstorm a chart collaboratively for one example.
