General features A Diet Plan is sound if it: n Provides recommendations that are safe and are supported by scientific evidence. n Suggests receiving a physician’s approval prior to initiating the plan. n Improves overall health and shows positive changes in lifestyle. 2009 2
Nutrition A Diet Plan is sound if it: n Meets nutritional needs. n Includes a variety of foods n Emphasizes low fat foods n Includes adequate fluids ( 8 glasses a day 64 oz). 2009 3
Nutrition A Diet Plan is sound if it: n Encourages eating smaller portions of nutritious foods but minimizes hunger or fatigue. n Doesn’t exclude entire classes of food items. n Considers individual food preferences. 2009 4
Nutrition A Diet Plan is sound if it: n Includes reasonable amounts of fiber and complex carbohydrates. n Reduces caloric intake to no lower than 1000 Kcal/d. n At this level, one should consume fortified foods and/or take multi vitaminmineral supplement. n 2009 Recommends losing in the range of 1/2 to 52

Social needs A Diet Plan is sound if it: n Provides practical suggestions for modifying food-related attitudes and behaviors n Educates about the need to set realistic weight loss goals n Includes techniques to monitor progress 2009 n such as recording waist-hip 8
Social needs A Diet Plan is sound if it: n Builds positive self-esteem n Provides strategies for coping with setbacks, difficult situations, and nonsupportive people n Offers opportunities for group support 2009 9
Avoid diets with the following components: n Excludes groups of foods n Grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy n Uses a lot of testimonials Doesn’t allow mixing of food groups Doesn’t allow all types of foods at all meals Uses a lot of special ingredients n Promises quick weight loss n n n (more than 1 -2 pounds a week) n Promises to be a cure for various other ailments 2009 10
Prior to Starting the Plan If any of the following are true, the individual should seek advice from a physician n He or she has existing health problems, such as heart disease or hypertension n He or she plans to lose weight as quickly as possible n He or she is over 40 years of age for men or 50 years of age for women and plans to perform substantially increased physical 11 2009 activity
