RELATIVE CLAUSES There always 2 sentences connected by a relative pronoun: that, who, which, where, whose. There are 2 types of relative clauses.
Defining relative clauses O We use defining relative clauses to say WHO or WHAT we are talking about. We don’t use commas in these clauses: we are DEFINING somebody or something: O The girl who likes Tom…… O The place where I love going to is … O The teacher whose car is …. . Are the sentences above complete? What is missing?
Relative pronouns O We use them to link 2 sentences: O Who /that for people O Which/that for things or animals O Whose for possession O Where for a place O When for a time O Example: That is the girl. The girl lives next door. O Can we make just one sentence?
Let’s practise defining relative clauses. O Join these sentences. O Where is th girl? The girl borrowed my pen. O That’s the uniform. We wore the uniform last year. O I like the dog. The dog is brown. O That’s the classroom. We do Science in that classroom.
Non-definig relative clauses O We give EXTRA INFORMATION about somebody or something. We use commas to separate the non-defining relative clause from the rest of the sentence. O Example: O Paul is 16. He loves house music. We can say: Paul, who is 16, loves house music. We can leave out (omit) the non-defining relative clause and the sentence can stand by itself. -
