Rejoice in the Lord Always! “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4: 4) Paul said this despite the fact that he himself was in chains. He rejoiced in his present trials, and the advantage that had been gained as a result (cf. Philippians 1: 12 -14)

Philippians 1: 12 -14 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; 14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. ”

Fellowship in the furtherance of the gospel “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now. ” (1: 3 -5)

Whenever Christ is Proclaimed “What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice. ” (1: 18)

Because of a Life of Faith “And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith. ” (1: 25)

Unity With Brethren “Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. ” (2: 1 -4)

Sacrifice and service for Christ and brethren “Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me. ” (2: 17 -18)

Brotherly safety and companionship “Therefore I sent him the more eagerly, that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less sorrowful. ” (2: 28) Paul here speaks of Epaphroditus, and relieves their fears concerning his health and safety.

The Fruit of one’s labors for Christ “Holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. ” (2: 16) “Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved. ” (4: 1)

The Lord hears and answers our prayers and grants peace “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. ” (4: 4 -7)

Actions of brotherly love and concern “But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. ” (4: 10)

Conclusion: May we often meditate on these things… “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy; meditate on these things. ” (4: 8) By so doing, we refuse to be distracted from the joy of faith that is in Jesus Christ!
