EXTRACELLULAR FLUIDS • THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF EXTRACELLULAR FLUID THESE ARE INTERSTITIAL, BLOOD, PLASMA, LYMPH AND TRANSCELLULAR FLUID. • INTERSTITIAL SURROUNDS TISSUE CELLS AND BATH THEM IN A SOLUTION OF NUTRIENTS. • BLOOD, PLASMA, LYMPH IS FOUND INSIDE BLOOD VASSALS AD LYMPH VASSALS • THERE IS ONLY VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF TRANSCELLULAR FLUID FOUND IN THE BODY
REGULATION OF EXTRACELLULAR FLUIDS • THE VOLUME AND COMPOSITION OF EXTRACELLULAR FLUID MUST BE REGULATED AND KEPT RELATIVELY FREE OF WASTE. MAINTAINING HOMEOSTASIS OF THE EXTRACELLULAR FLUID IS THE JOB OF THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM. SOMETIMES THIS REQUIRES MAINTAINING IONS AND REMOVING EXCESS FLUIDS, AND OTHER TIMES REQUIRES MAINTAIN FLUID AND REMOVING EXCESS IONS. • BY ADJUSTING THE AMOUNT OF WATER AND SODIUM REABSORBED WITHIN THE NEPHRON, THE KIDNEYS REGULATE THE AMOUNT OF AND OSMOLALITY (SODIUM CONTENT) OF EXTRACELLULAR FLUID.
REGULATION OF EXTRACELLULAR FLUIDS • KIDNEYS REGULATE THE VOLUME AND COMPOSITION OF BODILY FLUIDS. • WATER BALANCE ENSURES THERE IS A THE SAME AMOUNT OF WATER EXCRETED AS CONSUMED • THE MAIN COMPONENT OF THE INTERSTITIAL FLUID THAT SURROUNDS CELLS OTHER MAIN COMPONENT IS INTRAVASCULAR FLUID OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM CALLED PLASMA – THE REMAINING IS TRANSCELLULAR FLUID • EXTRACELLULAR FLUID IS THE INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT OF ALL MULTICELLULAR ANIMALS AND IN ANIMALS WITH A BLOOD CIRCULATORY SYSTEM • HOMEOSTASIS REGULATES THE PH, SODIUM, POTASSIUM, AND CALCIUM CONCENTRATES OF EXTRACELLULAR FLUIDS • VOLUME OF ECF IN YOUNG ADULT MALES IS 20% OF BODY WEIGHT – ABOUT 14 LITERS – 11 L OF INTERSTITIAL FLUID THE REST IS PLASMA • THE EXTRACELLULAR FLUID PROVIDES THE MEDIUM FOR THE EXCHANGE OF SUBSTANCES BETWEEN THE ECF AND THE CELLS, AND THIS CAN TAKE PLACE THROUGH DISSOLVING, MIXING AND TRANSPORTING IN THE FLUID MEDIUM. SUBSTANCES IN THE ECF INCLUDE DISSOLVED GASES, NUTRIENTS, AND ELECTROLYTES.
