If you attended either of these sessions additional credit will not be awarded. • • Discuss what comprises drug diversion, including West Virginia statistics on prescription drug abuse and resulting deaths. State the epidemiology of chronic pain and misuse of opioids. Describe the indicators for opioids in chronic pain treatment including general characteristics, toxicities and drug interactions. Outline patient evaluation and risk assessment and tools to assess risk and monitor benefits. Explain the initiation and ongoing management of chronic pain in patients treated with opioid-based therapies. Discuss a case study of a patient with chronic pain. Identify diversion and drug seeking behaviors and tactics. State best practice methods for working with patients, prescribers and law enforcement concerning patients suspected of drug seeking behavior and diversion. Give examples of compliance with controlled substances laws. Identify registration with and use of the West Virginia Controlled Substances Monitoring Program established in West Virginia Code 60 A 91. Define Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and contributory medications. Provide an overview of gabapentin and its contributions to the opioid epidemic. Outline the origin, distribution and impact of designer opioids on today’s society. Pharmacists and HPV: Helping Provide Vaccination (Knowledge-based) • • Describe the disease process of HPV infection. Identify strains of HPV responsible for various cancer types. Determine the appropriate vaccine schedule for a patient. Discuss suboptimal HPV vaccination rates in WV and methods of improvement. Insulin Management for the Practicing Pharmacist (Application-based) • • • Review current guidelines for the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Compare and contrast available insulin products and their uses. Discuss the transition from one insulin product to another. Demonstrate ways to mitigate the risk of hypoglycemia in patients using insulin. Discuss the role and initiation of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems in patients with insulin dependent diabetes. Design a safe and efficacious insulin regimen for a patient with insulin dependent diabetes. CONTINUING EDUCATION West Virginia University School of Pharmacy (WVUSo.
