Coastal Plains Sub-Regions ◦ ◦ ◦ Piney Woods Gulf Coast Plain South Texas Plains Post Oak Belt Blackland Prairie Landforms ◦ In this region it is mostly forest, wooded areas ◦ Beach and Coast area along Gulf of Mexico with many Islands and Bay’s Major Cities ◦ Dallas, Beaumont, Houston, Galveston, Brownsville, Mc. Allen, Laredo Major Rivers ◦ Sabine, Trinity, Neches, Brazos, Colorado, Guadalupe, Nueces, Rio Grande, and San Antonio Climate – Long warm, rainy humid summers. Short mild winters. Long growing seasons for crops
Native Texans Coastal Plains ◦ Karankawas – Nomads, they hunted and gathered. Lived in Wigwams, which were portable huts ◦ Coahuiltecans – Nomads , hunted and gathered and lived in portable huts ◦ Caddos – Farmers, built permanent settlements and even perfected crop rotation. ◦ Wichitas – Mostly hunted, but farmed some. Lived in permanent housing. ◦ Atakapas – Farmers as well as hunted and fished. Lived in permanent housing.
Native Texans Mountains and Basins ◦ Jumanos – Grew corn and a few crops. Lived in brick Adobe homes ◦ (Apaches would later attack from the Great Plains)
Native Texans Great Plains and North Central Plains ◦ Tonkawas – hunted for buffalo, depended on buffalo for everything. Lived in tepees. ◦ Apaches – hunted for buffalo as well. Very skilled on horses, and also very violent to other tribes. Lived in tepees as well. ◦ Comanches – hunted buffalo as well. Lived in tepees. ◦ Kiowas – hunted buffalo, but also gathered fruits and berries and nuts. Lived in tepees.
