The three different types of regions in World Geography There are basically three different types of regions in World Geography…Formal, Functional, and Perceptual. BUT before we start discussing them- Get out your notebooks and something to write with you need to know this stuff!
Functional Region A “functional region” is a defined as: A central place and the surrounding places affected by it. • The City of Dallas is defined on its own but other places are affected by Dallas, too. • Can you name some of the other places in the “DFW metro region”?
Formal Region “Formal Regions”are defined as areas in which certain characteristics are found throughout that place. • Formal Regions such as countries, states, and cities all share the same laws, government, etc. • Would you know if you stepped in or out DFW? How?
Perceptual Regions are defined by people’s feelings and attitudes • Where is “The Pacific Northwest”? • Is Washington in the“Pacific Northwest”? • Is TEXAS in the Midwest or somewhere else?
