Refraction Refraction is the bending of a wave
Refraction • Refraction is the bending of a wave caused by the change in its speed as it moves from one medium to another – What are some mediums that waves travel through? Liquids, Air, Solids – Does light need a medium to travel? NO! It can travel through SPACE!
Refraction of Light • Light travels faster in less dense mediums than more dense mediums
Refraction (Slowing Down) • When a wave passes into a medium that makes it slow down, the wave will bend toward the normal Air Water
Refraction (Slowing Down) • When a wave passes into a medium that makes it slow down, the wave will bend toward the normal Air Water
Refraction (Speeding Up) • When a wave passes into a medium that makes it speed up, the wave will away from the normal Air Water
Refraction (Speeding Up) • When a wave passes into a medium that makes it speed up, the wave will away from the normal Air Water
• Refraction causes underwater objects to appear closer to the surface than they really are • (in the diagram, the red dotted line is what we see because our brain interprets light as coming from a straight line path)
Total Internal Reflection
Total internal reflection • When the light ray (from water) is emerging at the critical angle, the refracted ray will be along the surface. AIR water
Total internal reflection • When the incident angle is larger than the critical angle, total internal reflection will occur.
Total internal reflection • View under water!! AIR water
Pyrex • Pyrex and vegetable oil have the same index of refraction!

The Law of Refraction •
Snell’s Law • Snell’s Law ni(sinΘi) = nr(sinΘr) index of refraction of first medium x sine of the angle of incidence = index of refraction of second medium x sine of the angle of refraction
Practice • Find the angle of refraction for a ray of light that enters a bucket of water from the air at an angle of 25 degrees to the normal – Draw a diagram first, then find the angle of refraction – ni = 1. 00 – nr = 1. 333 – 1. 00 sin(25)=1. 33 sinx – 0. 3178 = sin x – X = 18. 52
