TREATMENT OF THE MENTALLY ILL • People believed (early 1800 s) that if people did not contribute to the economy they were useless. • As a result, debtors, children who were offenders, and the mentally ill were often locked up in jails with murderers and thieves. • Dorothea Dix and other reformers worked to change Americans’ ways of thinking about these institutions and their inmates.
