Reflective Writing Professional Industrial Development
Aim • Outline what reflective writing is and why it is important • Workshop on reflective writing • Mezirow (2000) argues that reflection only leads to learning if it leads to transformation. Apply this to PID?
PID assignment • Get out of it what you put in • In previous years lead to many offers: • • ORCA Tagging Great white sharks Marwell research projects Eel monitoring Sussex wildlife trust RSPB http: //www. dailyecho. co. uk/news/environment/10652993. Lucy_is_helping_t o_save_the_planet/
Reflective writing • Needed for PID • Rarely anyone's favourite and can be challenging • Builds higher level (graduate) skills including: Describing Analysis Reasoning Reflecting Critiquing Evaluating
Plymouth Uni resource on critical thinking
Exercise on Reflection • Specific tasks were shared out amongst members of my team. Initially, however, the tasks were not seen as equally difficult by all team members. Cooperation between group members was at risk because of this perception of unfairness. Social interdependence theory recognises a type of group interaction called ‘positive interdependence’, meaning cooperation (Johnson & Johnson, 1993, cited by Maughan & Webb, 2001), and many studies have demonstrated that “cooperative learning experiences encourage higher achievement” (Maughan & Webb, 2001). Ultimately, our group achieved a successful outcome, but to improve the process, we perhaps needed a chairperson to help encourage cooperation when tasks were being shared out. In future group work, on the course and at work, I would probably suggest this. • Reference Maughan, C. , & Webb, J. (2001). Small group learning and assessment. Possible structure for reflective writing • Description- what happened? • Interpretation- what is important? Interesting? Can it be link to literature? • Outcome- What have you learnt? What is the future implications of this? • See if you can identify each of these sections in the previous example
Why? • Integrates theory and practise • Identifies the Learning outcomes of your experience
How? • Need to be comparing links between theory and practise • So your skills and those needed • Try to back up with academic evidence • Describe what happened briefly and objectively (diary) • Reflect using one of the reflective models • Gibbs, Bouds, Atkins and Murphy or any other you prefer.
Reflective cycles Gibbs, Bouds, Atkins and Murphy or any other you prefer
How? • Avoid overly emotive terminology- still academic writing • Past tense for reflections but can jump to present and future tenses as appropriate.
Examples • Gaining experience and practical skills such as GIS techniques, scuba diving and boat handling will evidence to potential employers passion for the subject and will further develop C. V. when compared to others (Wright and Barlett 2000). - Could tie to SWOT • The current XXXX sector is highly competitive; it is important to research into related jobs and make contacts within the industry to increase employability (University of Kent, 2013). • Potential job market is on the increase as more domestic pets are being brought annually (Power, 2012). • It is important to be a focused and calm individual who can deal with stress and dangerous situations (Oakley, 2014)
Moving forward • Identify a reflective cycle that works for you. • Use that to identify tasks/skills/ research to work on during PID period • Next week no session- use the time to finalise dissertation seminar • Next PID- first week back after Xmas holidays (9 th Jan)
Further exercises • Read through the article Park 1 • Once read discuss in groups which parts are reflective. • ID those sections on one copy of the article
Move on to Park 2 • Again read though • Discuss how the reflective elements have changed • Which piece do you think is most effective • If finished continue on with Park 3 as above.
