+ Why do we need it? n We have to do it to pass n To find gaps in our knowledge so we can address them & then apply what we learn n To widen our professional boundaries n To benchmark our performance against our peers & supervisors n To develop as adaptive experts n To generate the questions that might enable service improvement or research
+ What constitutes reflective practice? n n n Observing n what is obvious & less obvious n look for the unfamiliar Self-awareness n What you sense or feel about the experience n Use of I Self-regulation n Recognise your own boundaries n Check against competencies
+ What constitutes reflective practice? n n Internal conversation n How you feel about the situation n Write about your reaction to the situation n Use feeling words Openness n n You are willing to highlight areas of your performance that fall short of what might be expected Learning n Show what you need to learn & be specific about how you are going to achieve this
+ How do we actually do it? n Learning log n Record of professional development n Quality not quantity n n But. . . if there is insufficient quantity then it is unlikely that an adequate quality will have been demonstated & the areas of the curriculum are unlikely to have been covered. A list of descriptive entries is not acceptable
+ What to write about n Chose meaningful experiences n Important to think why have you chosen this specific case n Cover all areas of the GP curriculum (check by clicking on review preparation) n Difficult patient encounters n Difficult encounters with staff n Things which went well n Significant event analyses
+ The e-Portfolio template n What happened? n What if anything happened subsequently? n What did you learn? n What will you do differently in future? n What further learning needs did you identify? n How and when will you address them?
+ What happened? n Brief synopsis which puts the case into context n Include emotions you were feeling at the time so reflections can be made on these n Did the case remind you of a previous case or past experience? n Don’t be afraid to be critical of your own actions n How did your colleagues react to the situation?
+ What if anything happened subsequently? n Complete the story n Reflect on how you feel about the situation now
+ What did you learn? n New medical knowledge n n Concerns about your own ability/thought processing n n n How will this help you in your future practice? How it will make you change? Insight into your own attitudes & beliefs n How did the case challenge you? n How will it make you change? Implications on service provision
+ What will you do differently in future? n Turn your learning needs into actions n What will you do differently next time n What would you like to improve
+ What further learning needs have you identified? n Specific short term goals n n Relate these to the GP curriculum Can be knowledge/behaviour based n Plus longer term goals to help you become a good GP n Break it down into manageable tasks n Set a time scale (be realistic) n Move it to your PDP (then do a log entry about your learning to complete the cycle)
