Refining Questions
Group Discussion: Scientific Questions • Think-Pair-Share : What is something about the processing of question development that resonates with you in a new way? Why? • Think through homework writing prompt, “Asking Questions” SEP, scientists panel * later we will talk about this for your students, at the moment we will focus on you and your process*
Refining Questions to make them Testable • In your Investigation Group, work with your chosen data files to chose and begin to refine your topic area questions into a testable question. • One question should emerge as the question your group will focus on for this workshop.
Characteristics of Testable, “SMART Questions” • Specific: not too broad – question begins with How, What, When, Who, or Which, (not with why or is). • Measureable: there are datasets available to answer the question – question can’t be answered just by doing reading. • Achievable: the question is able to be investigated with data – data are available to, or accessible by you. • Relevant: who cares and why do they care • Temporal or Spatially oriented – these comparisons are usually more accessible and informative
