Why reference? There are many different resources used when writing essays or researching a topic. When you use information, ideas and quotes gathered from these resources, you must acknowledge where the information came from in the form of a bibliography A bibliography is a detailed list of the resources used in an essay or research topic. The reasons for listing or 'citing' all references are to: acknowledge your sources (avoid plagiarism) allow the reader to verify the information provided provide information so the reader can check your sources (St. Columba’s College Planner 2017, p. 17)
What to reference/cite? According to Gabe (n. d): All sources of information used in writing your essay must be referenced. You use citation to: Acknowledge others’ work in your work Refer to them individually (surname/organisation, year) in a body of work Using a direct quotation (surname/organisation, year, page) Citations are used for ideas, images and quotes Example
How to cite within a text? According to Wozniak (2016), the students in her class need help with citing Author’s surname within a text. This would be true for many people. My favourite quote in literature is when Anne from Anne of Green Gables states, “…tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it. . . Yet. ” (Montgomery, 1908 p. 255). Images: One of the images … (Rinaldi, 2012). The image of Taylor Swift - Speak Now Tour Hits Sydney, Australia 2012, (Rinaldi, 2012) shows that…. followed by year in brackets. Full reference added in bibliography Author’s surname & year in brackets. Full reference added in bibliography N. B All sources used, from referring to them directly or using their ideas must be added in the bibliography.
How to acknowledge images For an image, use the title of the image, creator, year. In the bibliography, include the full reference. Taylor Swift - Speak Now Tour Hits Sydney, Australia 2012. (Rinaldi, 2012)
What does a bibliography look like? • • • It follows the school Bibliography guide It is based on the Harvard System It is in alphabetical order It includes all resources used (including information, ideas & quotes) It is one long list (Planner p. 17 -20; Online Reference Generator) (St. Columba’s College Planner 2017, p. 17 ) Refer to the College Planner or Online Generator further assistance
