Referee Systems of Control n Diagonal System of Control n Referee and two assistant referees. (Sometimes referred to as a Center and 2 AR’s) n n It is the only system of control approved by FIFA, USSF and AYSO. Dual Referee System of Control n n n Two referees with equal authority. Referee Mechanics (diagonal system) Review n Run along a broad diagonal n n n Control Play n Use whistle to start and stop play n Use hand signals to indicate restarts Use cards to indicate misconduct n n n Stay close to play (10 -20 yards) Keep play between self and AR ◄ (whistle only when necessary) (U 12 & up only) Use voice to provide positive instruction Act Professionally n n n Accept advice from your ARs (when appropriate) - must remember to check ARs frequently Don’t be afraid to correct mistakes Sell your calls!!! AR Mechanics (diagonal system) Review n AR Mechanics n n n n n Run along touch line between goal line and halfway line. Stay in-line with 2 nd last defender. Follow ball to goal line when practical. Keep flag straight down, except when signaling. Stop running before signaling. Always signal clearly with your flag. Don’t “chat” with coaches and spectators. Always look and act involved and professional. AR Duties n n n Check substitutes and count players on the field (or subs). Keep coaches and spectators off the touch line. System of Control n Dual Referee System of Control n Two referees with equal authority. n Used in college, high school and some other competitions. n Was used in AYSO for over 40 years. n It is used in small sided Region 85 games in divisions U 8, U 9, and U 10 only. The Dual Referee System is not to be used in AYSO Region 85 games in divisions U 12 thru U 19. It is never used in Extra play, or in tournaments, even if they are played on Region 85 fields. Dual Referee System n Who’s in Charge ? The ‘ Referee Team. ‘ n n n There is no senior referee based on experience, badge level, size, age, gender, or best uniform. The referee who blows a whistle first makes the call. The trailing referee starts Kick-offs. Agree on a timekeeper (and the backup signal). Agree on how to ask each other for help during the game. What We Don’t Do !!! n Show any form of disrespect to our partner n n n Act as individuals, cover the whole field, etc. Line up directly across from our partner. Make calls under our partner’s nose.
