What is an ‘environmental footprint’? The effect that a person, has on the environment. This could be the amount of natural resources, water, or energy that they use.
Think about your environmental footprint Make a list of everything you do, and everything you use which contributes towards your environmental footprint. You might find that the list is really long! Everything we do has an impact!
Think about your clothes • The plants (cotton etc) were grown and drank lots of water. • These plants were harvested and processed into fabrics, which involved a lot of energy and water. • The materials were dyed. • The finished clothes were then transported to a store, possibly travelling a long way across the world. • You travelled to a store to buy them. • You machine wash (and possibly machine dry) these items regularly.
How can we measure our environmental footprint? Check out these environmental footprint calculators: World Wildlife Fund: www. footprint. wwf. org. uk/#/ Nature Conservency of Canada: www. nature. org/en-us/get-involved/how-tohelp/carbon-footprint-calculator/
Virtual Water Virtual water is the water used to create products, but is not seen in the final product. Can you guess how much water was used to create some of your favourite things?
