To what extent has tourism reduced the development gap in Jamaica? [6 marks] Point • • Employment Tax Income Multiplier effect Tourism has totally/significantly/partially reduced the development in Jamaica Evidence This is because (Add specific facts from your table) Explain This has reduced the development gap because (the multiplier effect) However, development is not even in Jamaica because _________ Point Evidence Explain Tourist areas of the North like ____have ______ However in central Jamaica __ For people this means ______

Tourism has significantly reduced the development gap in Jamaica. This is because it products

Tourism has significantly reduced the development gap in Jamaica. This is because it products over 24% of Jamaica’s GDP, generating over $2 billion in income each year from the 2. 5 million tourists and 1. 1 million cruise ship visitors. This creates over 200 000 direct and indirect jobs. This creates a multiplier effect where employed people have more income, improving their standard of living. They also spend income in the local economy which creates more jobs, and tax from employment and business is payed to the Government who spend it on improving services like infrastructure and water supplies, improving quality of life. Tourism also creates more employment in indirect jobs like manufacturing, because they supply the tourist industries, creating more jobs, tax and service improvements. However development is not even in Jamaica because tourist areas in the north and around Kingston benefit more than non-tourist areas. Tourist areas in the north like Montego Bay have better roads, and other services like water supply because the Government realises they are needed to attract tourism. Local people also benefit from this, improving their quality of life. Also there is more employment in these areas improving standard of living. However in central Jamaica less tourists visit so less money has been spent on basic infrastructure by the Government. For people this means access to basic services like water are poor and unemployment is higher reducing peoples quality of life.

1. The main areas of tourism are in the North of the Island for example Montego Bay and around the capital Kingston in the South of Jamaica. 2. Four reasons why tourists are attracted to Jamaica are Reggae music and parties, beautiful beaches, all inclusive holidays, mountain walking, waterfalls, diving weddings Feature Statistic Percentage contribution to GDP (2014) 24 Income from tourism S 2 billion Number of cruise ship visitors 1. 1 million Number of other visitors 2. 5 million Average cruise visitor spend per day $70 Average spend of other visitors S 120 Number of tourist related jobs 200 000 3. Other visitors spend more per day than cruise ship visitors because cruise ship visitors have already often paid for food and accommodation as part of their holiday package 4. Direct employment is employment directly related to tourist visitors For example hotels, attractions and transport 5. Indirect employment is other employment that benefits from the growth of tourism and tourist jobs For example shops, banking and manufacturing 6. Tourism creates both direct and indirect tourism because it needs people to work in places like hotels, but other businesses grow because they produce things like food or other products to supply the tourism industry. 7. The tourism multiplier effect benefits Jamaica because it creates jobs for people who pay tax and spend income. The hotel helps supply industries to grow creating more jobs. People spend tax in the local area also helping jobs grow. Increased tax allows the Government to spend more on services benefitting tourism and local people 8. Many local people benefit from tourism because over 200 000 jobs have been created directly or indirectly This means people earn more income and have a higher standard of living 9. Other local businesses benefit from tourism because tourists spend between $70 to $120 per day in the local economy This means businesses earn more money increasing their profits 10. The Government benefits from tourism because they receive tax on the S 2 billion per year spent on tourism This means they can spend it on services and infrastructure, improving quality of life for people in Jamaica 11. Tourism benefits people in the tourist areas of the North because this is where most of the tourists visit so services like roads and infrastructure are good or tourists wouldn’t visit. For many people his means services like roads, water supply and other services are good, improving their quality of life 12. Tourism benefits people less in the central areas of Jamaica because less tourists visit there areas so the government has spent less on roads, water supply and other essential services to attract tourists For many people his means they lack basic services so their quality of life is poor
