Bans • The state of California banned the term “Redskin” for use as a school team or mascot. • They believe that it has a negative meaning
National Congress of American Indians • Two members from the National Congress of American Indians said that not only the Redskins, but all mascots who use Native American names are offensive. • They claim that they are inappropriate and putting them into sports doesn’t do them honor. • They believe that all states should ban these names.
Florida State Seminoles • Florida State works with and has a strong connection with the Seminole Tribe. • They make them a part of their community and do their best to honor them. • It is believed that they won’t be affected by these legal issues.
Blackhorse v Pro Football, Inc. • In Blackhorse v Pro Football, Inc. six petitioners came together to cancel six trademarks with the Washington Redskins. • The US Supreme Court has declined to listen to the Redskins’ challenge and have decided to listen to another case.
The Slants • The Slants are a band that have gotten into legal trouble because of their name. • They made the case that trademarks on “disparaging” terms violates free speech rights from the First Amendment. • The outcome of their case has a large effect on terms with the Redskins’ case.
