Foundation What the examiner said: Many candidates gave good accounts of recycling in their local area with clear detail on the frequency of collections and the types of recycling. Some higher scoring candidates even gave detail of how the recycled waste was processed. Some candidates confused local scale and made reference to examples such as Germany which were limited to Level 2 or simply gave accounts of waste disposal which were self-limiting.

Higher What the examiner said: Most candidates were able to access Level 2 and could describe in good detail and with specific points their local recycling schemes. Some candidates did fall foul of the trap of generalising their response, and omitting specific points, especially as many local recycling schemes are similar in undertaking. Candidates need to try to include specific detail e. g. an organisation or a fact to support their points in case studies. The high scoring candidates often made reference to how the recycled items were processed and remade. They could often refer to the names and locations of reprocessing plants and the Bracknell scheme was one that scored well. References to Germany or other national schemes were held at Level 1. The quality of written communication is assessed in Part B case study questions and they should therefore organise their answers in logical, coherent sentences.
