The tank stream Mrs Grover Purpose: The Tank Stream was the settlement’s first and main source of fresh water for thirty-nine years. Named for the water tanks cut into its sides to store water. What are you building? A wide-mouthed stream running into Sydney Harbour. At high tide, the water was deep enough for schooners to go up as far as present-day Bridge Street. Tanks – 3 or 4 cut into the sandstone sides of the stream, in order to store water during the 1790 drought. Each tank was five metres deep and held 20, 000 litres. A bridge – in 1788 a gang of convicts were employed in rolling timber together, to form a bridge over the stream at the head of the cove (at Bridge St). The bridge was rebuilt in stone in 1803 and made wider with a lower arch in 1812. Green Belt – there was a 15 metre green belt along each bank. Where will it be built? It started in a swampy area between today’s Hyde Park and Sydney Town Hall, forming a channel along Pitt street down to Sydney Cove (see map). What materials? Sandstone was excavated to create three storage tanks, one adjoining Pitt and Spring Streets, two more on Bond Street.
