Reconstruction battle begins… • South’s economy was left in a state of collapse. • Emancipation proclamation threw their agricultural system into ruins. WHY? Thanks to the emancipation of African Americans…who was going to pick the cotton now?
Reconstruction battle begins… • Lincoln’s Plan: – Offered an amnesty to all southerners who took an oath of loyalty to the US and accepted the Unions proclamation concerning slavery. – Amnesty Pardon The action of forgiving or being forgiven for an error or offense.
Reconstruction battle begins… • Radical Republicans Plan: • DID NOT want to reconcile with the South. 1. Prevent the leaders of the confederacy from returning to power. 2. Want the Republican party to become a powerful institution in the south. 3. Wanted the federal govt to help African Americans achieve political equality by guaranteeing their right to vote in the south.
Reconstruction battle begins… • Why would the radical republicans want to give the slaves the right to votes? • Before the slaves counted as 3/5 vote of a free persons vote. • So they wanted the African Americans on their side, so they wanted to protect their voting rights so they would vote for them.
Reconstruction battle begins… • The Freedmen’s Bureau: • They were given the task of feeding and clothing war refugees in the South using surplus army supplies. – Helped former slaves find work on plantations – Negotiated labor contracts with the planters – Specified the amount of pay and the number of hours.
Reconstruction battle begins… • Johnson’s Plan: • Restoration plan Same as Lincoln’s except – He excluded all former officers and officials – Former Confederates that owned property that was worth more than $20, 000 – These rich planter elite were the ones Johnson believed caused the Civil War.
th 13 Amendment • Banned slavery in the United States.
th 14 Amendment: • Gave citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the US and declared that no state could deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process. • Also declared equal protection of the laws.
th 15 Amendement • This declared the right to vote “shall not be denied on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude”.
Ku Klux Klan • Started by former Confederate Soldiers • Secret Society • GOAL: drive out all union troops and carpetbaggers in TN and regain control of the Southern Democratic party. • Rode at night and would terrorize supporters of the Republican party.
