Recommendation Response Plan Lali Tchelidze Recommendation Basic assumption

Recommendation Response Plan Lali Tchelidze Recommendation : ”Basic assumption of 1 W/m used for shielding calculations needs to be confirmed by realistic end-to-end beam simulations, showing sufficient margin. Normal operations scenario should include beam loss scenarios. ” “Accidental beam loss: need to establish “worst case” scenarios based on risk analysis and to conduct simulations to determine appropriate shielding and system interlocks for personnel protection. ”

Recommendation Response Plan Lali Tchelidze Plan: 1. Further investigate an approach to shielding design in other (similar) labs. 2. Assign beam spill limits to already existing event classes H 1 – H 5, present to SAG, modify if necessary and get an approval. Written document – due by March 1, 2014. Note: Part of this document would have to be generated based on input from end-to-end beam simulations. 3. Verify that shielding is sufficient for all possible loss scenarios. • • 4. Verify that shielding is sufficient for normal operations 1 W/m plus additional short-term beam loss cases as/if defined in the previous item (include both realistic and simplified geometry models). Technical note – due by May 1, 2014. Support continuous average 1 W/m loss limit by taking the following actions: • • Define guidelines for hands-on maintenance conditions at ESS (related to linac availability), present to SAG, modify if necessary and get an approval. Written document due by 14 March, 2014. Conduct linac activation simulations to show limiting beam losses (to still allow hands-on maintenance). Technical note due by May 1, 2014. Michal Jarosz in AD is providing realistic model for SCL components.
