Reception Reading Meeting

Speaking and listening are the key skills children need to develop their ability to read and write. What you can do? Talk to them! Model and expect good listening. Encourage the understanding and use of new vocabulary. Sing songs, rhymes and read poems, enjoying the rhyme and rhythm of words. Read to your child regularly and develop their story language (library books given each Friday)

A New Vocabulary Phonics – the learning of letters and sounds Phoneme – the sound a letter makes Grapheme – the written letter Segmenting – breaking a word up into its component sounds Blending – running sounds together to make a word Tricky words – words that cannot be decoded using phonics cvc – c = consonant v = vowel Digraph - a sound made with two letters eg. sh ai oi Phonetically plausible – written phonetically that it can still be read although it is spelt incorrectly eg. torl werk cabij

Reading at School In addition to a weekly library book, a levelled reading book will be given. Teacher and TA read 1: 1 with each child in a group. All children will have read 1: 1 with both adults by the end of the week. PLEASE ensure your child’s book is brought in EVERYDAY.

Reading at home Quiet place for reading Inside cover of books have helpful tips and comprehension Words are everywhere – look out for them with your child questions. Follow your child’s lead – let them teach you their new sounds Password game Enjoyable shared experience! PLEASE sign the reading record so that we know you have read with your child.
