Reception Class Weekly Challenges

There a range of excellent online e books available here You just need to register and then will have access to all of the online books. If you scroll down to the RED Read Write Inc books you will find the level for the Tigers- if the RED books are too easy have a try of the GREEN level instead!

Y • Practise writing a short sentence- The rocket can go to the moon/ The boat can zoom/ The car is on the road. (when we write a sentence we do this together, listening to the sounds in each word, remembering finger-spaces, thinking about any tricky words which we cannot sound out and remembering a fullstop at the end. • Use the BBC bitesize resources to practise the phase 3 sounds-here You could choose 2 sounds a day to practise- read the words with the wizards, write the words and then write a short sentence with the sound included e. g. I can zoom to the moon (oo sound)

There are now new books from the Read Write Inc scheme which is a phonics scheme. Scroll down until you get to the PURPLE level books and start here. If they are too easy for your child move on to the next colour.
Your reading challenge this week is to retell a story… • Choose a story you like, • Read the story with a grown up and try to remember the words-if you practise every day this should get easier! • Choose somebody to be your ‘audience’ • Tell the story! Think about- adding different voices for characters, reading loudly or quietly and using some toys or costumes to help you tell the story!
Maths-minibeasts (number) • • • Draw some minibeasts- spiders/ ladybirds/ beetles/ flies/ butterflies etc- can you count up all the legs on your picture? Make a number line worm- (template is on the next page) Go on a minibeast hunt outside and write down how many of each minibeast you saw- how many did you see all together? Minibeasts have the same number of legs on either side of their bodies- practise double numbers by drawing minibeasts and adding the legs together.

Draw a picture of one of your friends. Can you write a sentence about them? You could write about why they are a good friend, what they like to do or are good at or what they look Remember to use your phonics to hear the sounds in the words as you write them, try to use some of our tricky words such as Ilike? go to the into me you my be we he she Remember to leave finger spaces in between your words and you could add a full-stop at the end of your sentence.
A self-portrait. Look into the mirror carefully and talk to a family member about what you look like. What colour are your eyes? (look really closely!) Your skin? Your lips? Do you have freckles? What shape are your eyes? Nose? Mouth? Face? Draw or paint a picture to show what you look like!

RE… Good News Wk 4 This is the last week of this topic, please plan a Pentecost celebration Remember: That everyone has good news to share. The happiness good news brings. The stories of Easter and Pentecost – Jesus sending his friend the Holy Spirit. Pentecost celebrates the Good News of Jesus. How the friends of Jesus felt. After Jesus had gone back to his Father in heaven, his friends were sad. They missed him. They felt lonely and afraid without him. On Pentecost day, they were all together in the house. Crowds of people came to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. The friends of Jesus did not go out to join them. They stayed all together in the house. They talked about Jesus and remembered what he had told them. As the wind filled the room, they began to feel different. Joy and happiness filled their hearts. It was wonderful. They knew that Jesus had kept his promise to send a new friend, the Holy Spirit. “Let’s go out and join the crowds. ” Peter said. “Let’s tell them the Good News that Jesus is alive. ”
RE… Good News Wk 4 Ideas for a Pentecost Celebration: Make red streamers to decorate, or windmills, Make head bands with flames, Choose special food or drink for the celebration Choose music to dance to! Think of some special prayers to say thank you for the Good News of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
People and Communities: When I grow up. Listen to the song and talk about what you want to do when you grow up? What job would you like to docan you find out a little more about it? Where would you like to live? Draw a picture of you when you are grown up!
