• Transverse Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) Large unpolarized gluonic cross sections dilute Double Spin Asymmetries in transverse measurements. • Analyzing power: Function of both x. F and p. T • Contributions to Transverse Spin Asymmetries: • Sivers Functions – • Initial state correlation between the transverse spin (ST) of the nucleon and transverse momentum (orbital motion) (k. T) of a parton within the nucleon. • Collins Functions – • Correlation between transverse polarization of the fragmenting quark and the transverse momentum of the produced hadron • probes parton Transversity (δq) • Parton spin effect in final-state hadronization (spin dependent fragmentation) 6/1/2009 Chris Perkins 4

Overall Goals: • Determine Quark Transversity Distribution and Orbital Parton Motion (k. T)

Overall Goals: • Determine Quark Transversity Distribution and Orbital Parton Motion (k. Difficulties: • Separating Sivers and Collins Effects in experiment • Theoretical connection between SSA and Transversity Distribution and Orbital Parton Motion 6/1/2009 Chris Perkins 5

Summary • Wide range of Forward Inclusive Particle AN have either been reported or are in progress – Results show AN tends to increase with x. F, as expected – p. T dependence does not appear to follow expected trend • To separate Sivers and Collins effects, we need to move beyond Inclusive particles – Full Jets, Correlations, Direct Photons, Drell-Yan • A Forward Hadron Calorimeter (FHC) will move us closer to these measurements in addition to possibly testing universality of quark polarization and single spin asymmetries – Proposed to be in place for RHIC Run 10 6/1/2009 Chris Perkins 28
