Phonetics Generally speaking, Phonetics is the study of speech sounds that are utilized by all human languages to represent meaning. However, there are different subfields of phonetics, namely articulatory phonetics, auditory phonetics and accoustic phonetics. Articulatory phonetics investigates and classifies speech sounds in terms of the way they are produced by the organs of speech. 3

Phonology is the study of the distribution of sounds in a particular language. While the same sounds may be found in two or more languages. No two languages organize their sounds inventories in the same way. This is why linguistics pointed out that while phonetics is general, phonology is particular. 4

Airstream Mechanism The egressive pulmonic airstream is the norm in most languages. For most speech sounds, lung air is pushed out of the body through the mouth or through both the mouth and the nose. Sounds produced in this way are referred to as pulmonic egressive speech sounds. 5
