William H. Johnson, Lamentation, ca. 1944, oil on fibreboard. • This painting depicts Jesus after his crucifixion. In the background are three crosses, two of them with men still on them as Jesus was crucified alongside two criminals at the time, as was common practice. • It is called ‘Lamentation’ as people were distraught when he died, as shown in the people surrounding him. • It roots within the ‘Harlem Renaissance’ where African American art had it’s revival in the US, 1940’s – it mixes African mourning rituals and European traditions. • Thus, a symbol of how Christians around the world relate to and honour the death of Christ.

Kim Ki-Chang, The Last Supper , 1953, watercolour on silk. • As titled, this painting depicts Jesus at ‘The Last Supper’ - a meal shared between himself and his 12 disciples (closest followers) before he was crucified. • He painted a whole series on the Life of Jesus, depicting figures within a traditional Korean setting, also in traditional robes. • A large part of his message, as a Catholic himself, was of the universal experience of the church and the collective memories of Christ around the world.

Is the message the same? • Ultimately, it matters to many believers as to how you depict Jesus BUT the main message of the death of Jesus, as told in Scripture remains the same. • Both paintings still follow aspects of the story as told in the Bible, about how Jesus died and the run-up to it. • There are many different elements to the story surrounding Jesus’s death, which is why the period surrounding ‘Easter time’ is so important to Christians today.

Main Task Introduction: Holy Week • Holy Week refers to the run-up to Jesus’ death e. g. the week before Easter Sunday. • We know the significance of Jesus’ crucifixion, but we need to understand the events surrounding his death. • And so, you are now historians, and need to establish the last movements of Jesus before he was put to death.
