Indian Removal • Jackson ordered the military to move all Native Americans east of the Mississippi into the Indian Territory (modern day Oklahoma)

Indian Relations • Westward expansion brought conflict with Indians, such as the Black Hawk War, as trails disrupted hunting grounds & violated previous treaty agreements • The Treaty of Ft. Laramie created vast Indian Territory but was repeatedly ignored by whites expanding West

Solution: Permanent Indian Frontier • Permanent Indian Frontier: – Military forts stretching westward along the trails settlers used to move West – These forts were used to protect settlers – These forts were used to round-up & keep Native Americans inside the Indian Territory
