Rebecca Barron
o "Founded on a strong belief system shared by the group, and focuses the bulk of time and effort into supporting those beliefs or championing causes with which they are associated" o Emphasizes & derives personal meaning from strongly held values and standards to be maintained o Form of Vision-Based Leadership • Creates and articulates vision • Extends and integrates follower's world views o Follower's attracted to/influenced by leader's ideas, not necessarily the leader (i. e. Speculative, visionary)
§ Steps to Take: 1. Vision creation and articulation 2. Identification of change requirements 3. Promote ideals, values, and maintain standards 4. Derivation of interpersonal meaning through followers Real Life Socialized Example: Mohandas Gandhi o Derives power from beliefs/values and the organization/society's confidence that he/she can accomplish a lot o 2 Types of Ideological Leaders: • Socialized – initiate action for betterment of society, regardless of personal consequences • Personalized – initiated action to acquire, maintain, and extend power, regardless of consequences of their actions for others Real Life Personalized Example: Adolf Hitler
Pros Cons § Intense personal will and determination § Can be inflexible § May provide betterment for § Does not insure desirable social § Offers followers a sense of § Takes no interest in personal followers organization or society accomplishment § Attention placed on beliefs instead of leader outcomes § May disregard needs of organization to achieve the goals based on beliefs/values
§ I chose Ideological Leadership because I was hoping to learn more about what defines an ideological leader, and the benefits and downfalls of being an ideological leader § Impact on the organization, society, or the world completely dependent on that leader's personal values, beliefs, and standards § Agree vision and values are important in leadership, but must take into account personal relationships with followers and be open to feedback § Surprised at amount of real world/historical ideological, highly influential leaders on both morally, ethically "good" and "bad" sides (according to Strange & Mumford study) § Mohandas Gandhi, Adolf Hitler, Margaret Thatcher, Deng Xiaoping, Eleanor Roosevelt, Fidel Castro, Ronald Reagan, Joseph Stalin, etc. § Spectrum seems more polarized and dangers of ideological leadership is evident
