Realization and Concept of the MDSS ASFi. NAG up-to-date 25 th July 2006 Albert Mathis, Dipl. Ing FH, Executive MBA, Any. Data AG, Switzerland albert. mathis@anydata. ch MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 1/19
Topics of this presentation ü MDSS - ASFi. NAG Realization ü MDSS - Code Input ü MDSS - Code format ü Probability of forecast precipitation ü Probability of forecast snowfall/snow cover Output ü Actual Treatment ü Treatment recommendations Expertise ü Calibration with Mathematician Ø Concept was proposed for the State of Ohio MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 2/19
MDSS – Austria Realisation MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 3/19
MDSS - Components Meteorological office Mobile data acquisition Weather forecast (incl. MDSS-Codes) Maintenance vehicle data Road weather information systems (RWIS) MDSS Maintenance decision support informations Measured road data MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 4/19
MDSS - System Location 1 Location 2 • Full system redundancy in two locations • High availability (99. 8%) • 700 RWIS, – Viasala, Luft, Micks, Boschung – 150 users, • 1, 600 miles of highway MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 5/19
MDSS – Sofware Modules Nowcasting / Forecasting Treatment recommendation Data acquisition Configuration Alarming Platform Data display / reporting MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 6/19
MDSS – User interface Main display • Secured log-in • Map based display • RWIS + Road weather segments • Danger level for upcoming hours • Time cursor MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 7/19
MDSS – User interface Other displays • History graph : – – Measured data Precipitation Alarms Status • Forecast accuracy – Comparision forecast / measurement MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 8/19
MDSS – User interface Other displays • Country summary • Still pictures • Satellite / radar pictures MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 9/19
MDSS - Code format • XXYYz. Z • • XX YY z Z Change on the road surface Weather, Precipitation Wind Temperature characteristics MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 11/19
Example MDSS-Code 066623 • Compact high fog, locally icing drizzle = black ice ü MDSS-Code = 066623 ü 06 freezing rain ü 66 freezing rain ü 2 wind: 30 -60 kmh ü 3 Temp. +/- 0°C. MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 12/19
MDSS - Codes • MDSS - Codes are generated every hour for 3 h, every 6 h for 32 h and every 12 h for 72 hours • MDSS - Codes are generated for approximately 220 sections of road (1’ 600 miles of highway) • MDSS - Codes communication between road manager and the weather prognosticator are very efficient. MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 10/19
Probability forecast for precipitation . Probability 100% 0% MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 13/19
Probability forecast for snowfall/snow cover (today and future) MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 14/19
Actual Treatment • No calibration is possible without the actual treatment. • No treatment recommendation is possible without the actual treatment. Same result as MDSSColorado (Winter 2004 - 2005). = Spreader - Data is necessary MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 15/19
Treatment recommendations MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 16/19
Calibration with Mathematician • Mathematician expertise helps calibrate the MDSS - System. – This expertise provides that the MDSS System works with a proven maximum effectiveness. – This effectiveness must be accepted from the owner of the road network (e. g. 92%). The owner knows now under which conditions the MDSS - System can’t be used (e. g. radarshadow). MDSS - Stakeholder Meeting, Falls Church, VA, 11 th August 2006 17/19
