What Is Realism? ● The movements of Neoclassicism and Romanticism challenged a new movement called Realism. ● Realism represent subject matter truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding artistic conventions, or implausible, exotic, and supernatural elements. ● A different type of realism is social realism (emphasized the depiction of the working class and treated working class people with the same seriousness as other classes in art). ● Realist artist focus on the problems of the world like poverty and political repression (the act of a state entity controlling a citizenry by force for political reasons). ● Realists tended to showcase sordid or untidy elements in their paintings.
Realist Artists Important figures in the Realist art movement were Gustave Courbet, Honore Daumier, and Jean-Francois Millet.
Rue Transnonain by Honoré Daumier ● ● ● Rue Transnonain is a recording of a battle between the people in Paris and the government. In this painting, a lone sniper shot and killed a soldier, allowing other soldiers to go into the residential area and murder families that dwelt inside the home. Daumier’s goal in this artwork was to stress the bloody, messy, and also the almost ordinary aspect of death.
Burial at Ornans by Gustave Courbet ● Gustave Courbet was the most famous French Realists who actively set out to offend caricature (a picture, description, or imitation of a person in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect) society.
The Gleaners by Jean● Francois Millet Jean-Francois Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers of which “The Gleaners” is one of his most well-known due to its depiction of the realities of the lower class.
The Horse Fair by Rosa Bonheur ● Rosa Bonheur was the most famous woman painter of the 19 th century. She broke from tradition in depicting the horse eye as it is, rather than using anthropomorphism (the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object) for emotional effect. [4] It has been suggested that one of the human figures is a self-portrait.

As an artist, he occupies an important place in 19 th century French painting as an innovator and as an artist willing to make bold social statements in his work. ● Jean-François Millet (October 4, 1814– January 20, 1875) was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon School in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers and can be categorized as part of the Realism art movement. ● Bonheur dressed in men’s clothes to look like a normal person while painting.
