Irregular Verbs in the Preterite • The preterite tense is used to talk about actions completed in the past. • TENER, PODER, HACER, and ESTAR are irregular verbs and like other irregulars that you will learn next semester, they do not use regular preterite endings.
Irregular Preterite Endings yo tú nosotros e iste él/ella/Ud. o vosotros imos isteis ellos, ellas, Uds. ieron * NO ACCENTS!!!!!
1. TENER Used as a First verb to talk about: Responsibilities • – To talk about things that you had to do in the past. In this context it is FOLLOWED BY the preposition que. Ej: Tuve que trabajar.
Root : TUV yo tuve nosotros tú Tuviste vosotros él/ella/Ud. Tuvo Tuvimos Tuvisteis ellos, ellas, Uds. Tuvieron
2. Poder (was/were able to) • Use poder to say that you were or were unable to do something. first infinitive. • Poder is a verb. Followed by an Ejemplos: Pablo no pudo comprar los sellos. Ayer pudimos nadar en la piscina de la escuela.

3. Hacer (DID/MADE) – Followed by a noun. • To say that you did or failed to do something. Ejemplos: Ej: Ayer NO hice la tarea. Ella hizo la cama. Roots : HIC/HIZ yo tú hice hiciste él/ella/Ud. hizo* nosotros hicimos vosotros hicisteis ellos, ellas, Uds. hicieron
4. Estar (was, were) • • Used to say you were at a certain location for a specific amount of time. Often followed by a preposition of location: en, allí, allá, aquí, etc. Ejemplos: - Mi madre y yo estuvimos en el centro comercial ayer. - Mi hermana estuvo en Europa el verano pasado.

Ir and ser share their preterite conjugations but carry the same present tense meanings. Root : No root. Both are completely irregular! yo tú fuiste él/ella/Ud. fue nosotros fuimos vosotros fuisteis ellos, ellas, Uds. fueron
5. Ir – To Go • Use to say that you went some where. • Remember: IR is always followed by the preposition a. • Use the contraction al (a+el)when the place you went to is masculine. - Fui al supermercado. a la when the place you went to is feminine. • Use - Fuimos a la estación de servicio.
6. SER – to be • The context of the verb makes its meaning clear. • It can be followed by a noun or an adjective to say what something specific was like in the past: Ej: La tarde fue divertida. • It can also be used to say who someone was: Ej: Mi médica fue la Dra. Serrano. El año pasado mi maestra fue la Sra. Hassle.
7. Dar (gave/fed) • Also irregular. Like SER and IR it does not use the transformer endings! • Often followed by a noun. • Often used with Object Pronouns (me, te, le, etc. ) • Ejemplos: - Ella me dio sellos. - Mi hermanito le dio de comer al perro.
DAR conjugates just like the verb ver. yo di nosotros tú diste vosotros él/ella/Ud. dio dimos disteis ellos, ellas, Uds. dieron
