Real Time (On-line) Transaction Processing Real time Transaction processing systems complete transaction immediately once they have been initiated. In most examples of real time transaction an online user initiates the transaction. Online users include employees of the organisation and also customers entering details via the web or other networks. It is important to note that when a user directly interacts with the system they become a participant in the system.

Real Time (On-line) Transaction Processing Real time Transaction processing systems are often known as ONLINE processing or OLTP. In real-time or online systems, as apposed to batch systems, each transaction must take place within a reasonable amount of time. If an operation takes longer than a second or two then feedback must be provided to assure the user that processing is still taking place. For example “online web purchases” typically ask the user NOT to hit refresh but to wait whilst a transaction is completed.
