Real Numbers
Real Numbers Real numbers consist of rational numbers and irrational numbers.
Rational and Irrational Numbers Rational numbers: All numbers that can be written as a/b, where a and b are both integers, and b is not equal to 0. Rational numbers in decimal form terminate or repeat. Irrational numbers: All numbers that cannot be written as a/b, where a and b are both integers and b is not equal to zero. Irrational numbers are non-repeating and non-terminating decimals.
Integers All integers are rational numbers because you can write any integer as n/1. { …, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, … }
Whole Numbers The whole numbers are the non-negative integers. {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …}
Natural Numbers The natural numbers are the whole numbers but not zero. Natural numbers are also called counting numbers.
