WHAT IS READING WORKSHOP? � An approach to teaching reading and writing � The workshop begins with a mini-lesson to build reading strategies and skills. � Students read independently � While students read, teachers confer with students to assess and to teach to individual need. � The last 10 minutes are spent debriefing students and discussing the connections they made, and addressing struggles with that day’s lesson.

WHY TEACH THIS WAY? � It gets kids reading! � Student � Every choice leads to active engagement child gets personal differentiated instruction and assessment. � All of the research currently available shows that kids who read more are have more academic success. � No child has to struggle with a book they aren’t prepared to read.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO AT HOME? � Honor and plan around reading time: � 30 minutes on week days � 60 minutes on weekends. � Encourage your child to read whatever he will read � Read with your child. � Sit down with your own book while she is doing her homework. � Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it with her. � Play a book on tape in the car and discuss it with him.

WHAT IS A READING LEVEL? � A-Z � A: Counting books, or alphabet books � Z: The Outsiders � Describes � Decode a students ability to (sound out) words � Read with fluency � Retell a story in their own words � Think critically about what they read

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT LEVEL MY CHILD IS ON? � Ask him or his reading teacher HOW DO I KNOW WHAT LEVEL A BOOK IS? � You won’t, but you can do a 3 -finger test
