Reading the Tectonic Plate Map

pic Divergent Boundary: Where plates are spreading apart. Plates move away from each other as new rock is formed between them

jk Convergent boundary: Where plates collide. One plate subducts under the other (subduction zone) Three types: Oceanic-Continental-continental Oceanic-Oceanic

jk Transform boundary: When convection currents cause plates to slide past each other. Breaks in the rock layer (faults) may occur here. Faults in this area are called transform faults. High earthquake risk

Heat Versus Thermal Energy Kinetic Molecular Theory: All matter is made of particles. When these particles collide energy is released.

Heat Versus Thermal Energy Kinetic Molecular Theory: All matter is made of particles. When these particles collide energy is released. Heating an object = Particles move faster = more energy Thermal Energy: the total energy of all the particles in a solid. Liquid or gas.

Heat: The amount of thermal energy that travels from a hotter object to a cooler object

Conduction and Convection Conduction: The transfer of heat from one substance to another or by direct contact of particles Convection:

Electromagnetic Radiation • Electromagnetic Radiation: Transfer of energy by waves traveling outward in all directions • Radiant energy: Energy carried by electromagnetic waves

Earth’s Energy Sources Residual thermal energy: Radioactive Decay: Solar Energy: Made of visible and infrared light.
