Reading Skill: Predicting l Does reading means starting at the beginning and going word by word, stopping to look up every unknown vocabulary item, until the end? l Reading is a “guessing game”. l Reading – guessing / predicting – reading –proving / disapproving
What is “predicting”? l Thinking in advance about what to be read. back
Why “predicting” so important? l Enables us to be aware of our goal in reading. l Calls into mind any experiences and associated knowledge that we already have about the topic and the text. l Helps us to focus in the reading process. l Improves comprehension. back
How to predict? l 1. Before Reading: l 2. While – reading:
l 1. Before Reading: l (1) using the skill of “predicting”, predict what information you may find in the text , before you begin to read it in detail.
l (2) using knowledge of the subject matter to predict about content
l (3) Using knowledge about the author to predict about writing style and content. back
l 2. While – reading l Using prior knowledge of the subject and the ideas in the text to predict l (1) the meanings of unknown words; l (2) the idea of the following; l (3) the text types and purpose, writing style; l (4) check comprehension
In order to predict, you must… l 1. have a large vocabulary l 2. have a large information base l 3. know about culture background l 4. know about writers and writing styles l 5. know about text types
About the passage: l l l 1. According to the title, can you guess what will the passage talk about? Introduce several kinds of festival. 2. How many pictures in the passage? What do you feel about them? 3. According to the pictures, can you know the characteristic of the festival? 3. What types of festivals are mentioned in the passage? What are they? 4. According to the subtitles, the passage can be divided into how many parts? Try to conclude main idea of each part.
