READING VOCABULARY AND DEFINITIONS • Acronym • Word formed from initials. Example: D. O. T. - Department of Transportation • Allusion • Passing reference or indirect mention. • Almanac • An annual publication containing tabular information in a particular field or fields arranged according to the calendar of a given year. • Anecdote • Short account of event. • Anthology • A collection of various writings, such as songs, stories, or poems.
CONTINUED…. . • • • Aphorism A brief, cleverly worded statement that makes a wise observation about life. Appendix A section at the back of a book that gives additional information. Autobiography A piece of writing written by a person about his or her own life. Bibliography The written list of all the sources used in a report or book. Caption A title or short description of a picture. conflict • • A struggle between opposing forces. context The circumstances or setting surrounding an event. Contrast The differences between two or more ideas, stories, characters, things, etc. Climax Most exciting moment of the story; turning point.

Excerpt A passage selected from a larger work. Falling Action The events after the climax which close the story. Fiction A story that is not true or is made up. Flashback When a portion of the story goes back in time. Foreshadowing The use of hints and clues to suggest what will happen later in a plot. Glossary A list in the back of a book with definitions of difficult words. Guide Words at the top of a dictionary page which help locate words.
• Irony • The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning. • Homophone • Two words that are pronounced the same way but have different meaning or spelling or both. (Example: bare and bear). • Homonym • 2 words have the same pronunciation and spelling but different meaning. (Example: bear- animal and bear- to carry) • Inform • To give information or facts. • Main Point • The most important fact, idea, or opinion. • Manual • A small, helpful book capable of being carried in the hand; handbook.
• Memoir • The story of a person's life, written by that person. (Also called autobiography) • Metaphor • A comparison of two unlike things, not using like or as. "Your eyes are stars" • Moral • A lesson learned from a story. • Multisyllabic • Words that have more than one syllable. • Myth • An old story that explains why something is or how it came to be; something imaginary. • Narrative • Writing that tells a story. • Oxymoron • A combination of two words that appear to contradict each other. (Example: jumbo shrimp)
• Parable • A story with a moral message or lesson. • Pun • a humorous play on words "I do it for the pun of it" • Resolution • finding a solution to a problem • Rising Action • The series of events and conflicts that lead to the climax. • Satire • work that pokes fun at human weaknesses • Stanza • a group of lines in a poem • Summary / Summarize • Using your own words to write a short restatement of what you have read. • Suspense • Uncertainty or anxiety the reader feels about what is going to happen next in a story
