Reading OS Maps Also How to answer the questions and how to refer to the map
Key to success • Answer exactly what is being asked • Support every part of your answer with evidence from the map • Statement, evidence and development, and more evidence • The QUESTIONS on OS are on map reading
Skills • Be familiar with the symbols • Be familiar with the scale… 1: 50, 000 • Be able to measure straight line distance, curved line distance, area of map, area of irregular shape • Be able to get grid refernces (LEN) • Be able to give directions
Sketch Map • Draw to half scale (9 cm X 12 cm) • Use graph paper, frame, title, North Sign, Scale • If there is a major lake or coastline put it in • Otherwise only include features that you are asked for • Use colour for clarity • Insert all relavant info into a key
Marking Scheme for Sketch Map • Proportions… 4 -2 -0 • Named features… 4 … 2 for name 2 for location • No north sign, frame, title, incorrect size… 2 marks off for each item
Relief • Colour • Contour lines, , lines on a map that indicate areas of equal height, can be 10 or 50 metre intervals • Spot heights • Triangulation pillars
Slope • A slope is described by its gradient • The formula for calculating gradient is the Vertical Interval divided into the Horizontal Equivalent • VI = the difference in height between 2 points this is in metres • HE = distance between 2 points • Convert the HE from cms into km then into metres • Then divide the VI into the HE • You will get 1 over ---- metres • The smaller the denominator the steeper the slope
Types of Slopes • • • Convex Concave Even Stepped Vertical
Cross Sections • A vertical section from one point on the map to another showing the relief of the area • Roads, towns, lakes rivers can be marked in
