What is Nonfiction? � The people, events, places, and ideas presented in nonfiction are real, not invented. � Nonfiction is written for a specific audience, or group of readers. � It has a clear purpose, or reason for writing.
Today’s Goal �Today we will learn about authors purpose in, in order to learn why people write nonfiction.
Turn and Talk �Review: What are the biggest differences between FICTION and NONFICTION? What is the difference between why people write Fiction and Nonfiction?
Author’s Purpose �Question: Do you like PIE?
Author’s Purpose �P. I. I. E. are the 4 main purposes of nonfiction. To Persuade ▪ Text that convinces you about a certain topic that has two sides. ▪ CLUE WORDS: Why, Should, Because… To Inform ▪ Text that teaches you about history, nature, or science. To Instruct ▪ Text that tells you how to do something in step by step instructions. ▪ CLUE WORDS: Many action Verbs like put, place, make, move, etc. To Entertain ▪ Text that is easy to enjoy and understand that is about something people do for fun. Usually the topic is a hobby.
Example – Think-a-loud �A train is a set of cars on a railway. It is like a special bus that can only drive on rails. A place where a train stops, to let people get on and off, is called a railway station. The locomotive (the first car of the train) pulls the cars along the track. Trains are used to carry people, as well as cargo, such as fuel, imported/exported goods, and so on.
P. I. E Pop Quiz #1 “Dinosaurs had adaptations which helped make them successful. They had an upright posture, with the legs underneath the body. This transformed their whole life-style. There were other features. Some of the smaller dinosaurs had feathers, and were probably warm-blooded. ”

Example: Pre-heat your griddle to 375° or heat a nonstick sauté pan or skillet over medium heat. Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Beat eggs thoroughly. Add the eggs, melted butter and half the milk to the dry ingredients and mix gently until combined. Now stir in the remaining milk until the batter is the desired consistency. Don't overmix!

Author’s Point of View When authors write, their stories often reflect their own feelings or beliefs. This is called the Author's Viewpoint/P. O. V. �The author reveals their viewpoint through their choice of words. �You can look for clues in the author's writing.
What is the author's P. O. V. on all day kindergarten? What clues told you? � The average school day for kindergarteners is getting longer, and it's paying off in improved reading skills. Public schoolchildren who attended kindergarten for a full day showed more improvement than those enrolled in half-day programs. This improvement will be carried on in elementary school and even high school. These children will be able to get better jobs when they are adults.
Author’s Point of View �What is the author’s viewpoint on full day kindergarten? It is a positive view point. They are in favor of it. �What clues did you find? The phrase “paying off” Mentions improved reading skills. Improvement carries on through schools. Can get better paying jobs as adults.
What is the author's P. O. V. on all day kindergarten? What clues told you? � The trend toward full day kindergarten programs in public schools is taking its toll on the young children of today. Recent studies showing improved reading skills may be misleading. This improvement in reading is unlikely to carry on as these children progress through elementary school.
Author’s Point of View �What is the author’s viewpoint on full day kindergarten? It is a negative viewpoint. They are against it. �What clues did you find? Phrase “taking its toll” Recent studies are misleading. Studies show improvements do not carry on.
