Reading Day: Outline Strategies 1. Hook 1. Picture walk 2. Build engagement & 2. Read aloud background knowledge 3. Body 4. Assessment 3. Paired Reading 4. “Summary Skill” Framed Assignment
1. Picture Walk ØIntroduce the book ØExamine the table of content ØAsk kids to make predictions about each subsection ØDo the Picture Walk (see for an example: http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=5_a. EVUXc. XTk) ØDiscuss WHAT the kids see ØWHO are the actors ØWHERE the action takes place ØWHAT are the underlying science concepts ØProvide contextual definitions for key vocabulary
2. Read Aloud ØRead first selection out loud ØBuild engagement & background knowledge ØModel good reading ØProvide/re-enforce contextual definitions for new vocabulary
3. Paired Reading (Directions; CCSSO 2007) 1. The Reader reads an excerpt (stop at the sticky square) in a low voice, only for the Listener to hear *If the Reader has difficulty with a word, he/she can ask for help from the Listener *If no help is asked for, then the Listener should give the Reader the opportunity to figure it out 2. Once the passage is read, the Listener provides a Summary that needs to be “approved” by the Reader • If the summary is not clear/accurate, the pair rereads silently to add what is necessary 3. Then the two switch roles, with the first Reader becoming the active Listener and Summarizer
3. Paired Reading (Routines) ØGive directions Øsuggested abbreviation: R → SSS [READ → STOP, SUMMARIZE, SWITCH] ØModel Øreading 1 -2 passages with a student Øhave 2 students complete 1 -2 passages (‘Fish Bowl’) ØAllow sufficient time for Application Øpaired work with the remaining passages
4. “Summary Skill” Framed Assignment Øreview 1 -2 summaries using web camera Øprovide feedback Øgrammar + meaning Øask kids to compare their work
