Reading Comprehension The process of reading comprehension is not only of decoding and reading words. The reader must understand the message of each phrase, sentence, paragraph, as well as the entire text. There are two components in this process: The reader The text

The Reader There are 3 aspects related to the reader: Background Knowledge: The reader must combine prior knowledge with the text (street knowledge and school knowledge) Component Skill Knowledge: Includes decoding, semantics (vocabulary), syntax, understanding pronouns, typographic features (punctuation), logic, and reasoning Motivation: Students who read slowly and without enjoyment, read less that other students. Students who have experienced failure in reading, are less motivated to read (Stanovich)

The Text types: Narrative texts: Their purpose is to tell a story. They have their own structure or internal organization called story grammar. The story grammar include setting, beginning, goal, attempt, plot , outcome , internal response, and ending. Story grammar components provide the reader with important comprehension hooks to hang on to when reading a text. Expository Texts: Their purpose is to inform and to teach students ( e. g. , science texts). In the first grades of school when the change from narrative texts to expository texts begins, students begin the transition from learning to reading to learn.
