Reading Club Fridays BY: PUJA GHELANI, SAMANA HUSAIN, HELEN FISHER
Summary We are serving the Henrico Adult Education Center. The students are learning English with the help of the VCU Globe students who would volunteer once a month on a Friday. Our goal is to assist them with their language skills as best as we can. In order to help their communication and reading skills, we are proposing a reading club for the students. This program will be for all classes and any students who want to join.
Rationale The students would benefit greatly from independent reading which would stimulate practicing English outside of the class. This would improve their communication will help the learners to work in groups and form bonds with each other based on their interests and experience with the reading assignments. Resources The meeting would take place on Fridays once a month. Any student enrolled in an ESOL program is allowed to join the reading club. The articles will be picked by either the instructor or the Globe students.
Objectives Methods gain more language skills through reading comprehension Five people in each group with the same article how to effectively communicate their ideas and opinions about the reading. Volunteers would go from group to monitor how engaged the students are in the discussions Volunteers will stimulate conversation among the students and proctor the discussion
Evaluation group members will present their articles and what they learned from it to the rest of the class We will see how they improve in communicating and reading comprehension as the semester goes on Budget Would be less than $20 because printing a page would. 25 cents Short stories would be free for use and copyright free. http: //www. rong-chang. com/qa 2/ which has 100 free short stories for ESL learners
Personal Perspective Reading is such an important ability and a quick way to develop many language skills. Seeing the students struggle with pronunciation and communication made us realize that this is important.
